Egyptian Pyramids

Free Pre-recorded Virtual Workshop with King’s Bay Branch of Brooklyn Public Library

Egyptian pyramids are among the most impressive structures built in ancient times. They served as monumental stone tombs for the Pharaohs that ruled the Egyptian people.  Tune in to the Kings Bay Facebook Page to learn more about these amazing structures and follow along with the video to build your own model pyramid!

Materials needed:

  • At least 3 recycled boxes of diminishing sizes OR one square box
  • Scissors
  • Tape & Glue
  • Construction Paper
  • Markers
  • Optional: art supplies to embellish your pyramid – stickers, buttons, beads etc.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

Free Virtual Workshop Series* with Rye Reading Room 

Session 4 of a 4 Part Series on Animal Architecture

Session 1: Grades K-2 at 3:00 to 4:00 PM

Session 2: Grades 3-5 at 4:15 to 5:15 PM

 

Create a habitat for your favorite zoo animal to keep it happy and healthy. Will you choose a giraffe, an elephant, a tiger, or maybe something else! Think about designing spaces for your animal to play, sleep, and eat!

Materials needed:

  • Cardboard base (at least 14×14, can be cut from a mailing box) OR a carton with the sides cut down to a few inches
  • Construction and/or tissue paper
  • Small recycled boxes to make a shelter for your animal
  • Cardboard scraps
  • Natural materials, such as twigs, pinecones, and pebbles
  • Scissors, tape, & glue
  • Optional: supplies you have at home like toothpicks, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, tin foil, paper straws, markers, animal figurines, playdough, etc.

*This is a 4 week series of virtual programs that will be held on Zoom. Registration will begin one week before the program.

Make an Enchanted Forest

Be a landscape designer for an imaginary land. 

Materials needed: cardboard base – can be cut from a mailing carton, tape, glue stick or Elmer’s glue, scissors, construction paper, small recycled boxes (to make castles, cottages, etc.), cardboard scraps to construct 3D elements.

Storybook Castles

Magnificent castles appear in many fairy tales. They are defensive structures designed to keep invaders out and its residents safe. 

Materials needed: a box for the castle – a shoebox or small mailing box work well, a smaller box for the castle keep, cardboard base larger than the castle box, tape – scotch or masking, glue stick or Elmer’s glue, scissors, construction paper, paper towel tubes (or paper rolled into a tall tube).

Make a Cabin In the Woods

Build your own Tiny House in the forest. It could be a playhouse, a vacation home or a year-round residence. 

Materials needed:

  • Small recycled box for the cabin – or paper rolled into small tubes to make logs
  • Cardboard base for the yard/forest (can be cut from a larger box)
  • Scissors
  • Glue – glue stick and/or Elmer’s
  • Tape
  • Construction Paper
  • Make trees out of pipe cleaners, cardboard or twigs you collect outside
  • Use art supplies you have at home to embellish your cabin!
